The new book which completes the Short Sharp Shanties project.
To complement the three Short Sharp Shanties CDs and the details of the project on this website (see menu), this book is a biography of John Short and gives a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of 19th century merchant seaman: his life story, where he travelled, the ships he sailed in. Also, by popular demand, it includes the shanties he sang.

Although it is a part of an overall project, A Sailor's Life stands as a comprehensively researched biography  in its own right. The book draws on the log-books of ships that John is known to have sailed on, on his family history, on local an international newspaper articles and reports and on other historical and archive material.
