George Lock was born at Cranscombe Farm, Brendon, on Exmoor, in 1882. His parents and grandparents had farmed Cranscombe before him. He wrote down, in the two school exercise books shown above, songs that were sung at shearing and harvest gatherings. His two books passed on to his daughter Ivy Archer (nee Lock - 1915 - 2013). We will list the repertoire and brief notes on this page in due course. In the longer term, we hope to revive the repertoire, which is an extraordinary mix of 'high' music-hall, folk songs and carols.
